Discovering Northern Sri Lanka: A Round Tour with Mr. Anup and Family
From Pidurangala to Jaffna — Exploring Sri Lanka’s Ancient Heritage and Northern Charm
Sri Lanka is an island of remarkable diversity, and travelling beyond the usual tourist routes reveals a completely different side of the country.
Recently, we had the pleasure of completing a memorable round tour with Mr. Anup and his family from India, taking them through some of the island’s most fascinating historical, cultural and natural destinations.
Their journey covered Pidurangala, Kaudulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Mannar and Jaffna, creating a wonderful route through Sri Lanka’s ancient heartland and the unique landscapes of the north.

Beginning with the Views of Pidurangala
The journey began at Pidurangala, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Sri Lanka.
Located close to Sigiriya, Pidurangala offers breathtaking panoramic views across the surrounding forests and towards the famous Sigiriya Rock.
For Anup and his family, the experience was a perfect introduction to Sri Lanka’s natural beauty — combining adventure, breathtaking scenery and a glimpse into the island’s ancient past.
Wildlife Adventure in Kaudulla
From Pidurangala, the family continued to Kaudulla, an area well known for its wildlife and natural surroundings.
The Kaudulla National Park region provides opportunities to experience Sri Lanka’s incredible wildlife in its natural environment. Depending on the season, visitors may encounter elephants and a variety of birds and other wildlife.
The safari experience added an exciting nature-filled chapter to the family’s journey.
Exploring the Ancient Kingdom of Polonnaruwa
The journey then continued to Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient cities.
The ruins of the former royal capital showcase magnificent temples, statues, monuments and ancient irrigation achievements.
Exploring Polonnaruwa allowed the family to step back in time and discover the remarkable history and engineering achievements of ancient Sri Lankan civilisation.
Discovering the Ancient City of Anuradhapura
Next, the tour continued to Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s most historically and spiritually significant destinations.
As one of the country’s ancient capitals, Anuradhapura is home to enormous stupas, ancient monasteries, sacred sites and remarkable archaeological remains.
The city’s peaceful surroundings and deep spiritual significance made this an especially memorable stop for the family.
Journeying Towards Mannar
From the ancient cities, we continued north-west towards Mannar, a destination with a character unlike anywhere else on the island.
Mannar is known for its distinctive landscapes, coastal environment, historic sites and fascinating cultural heritage.
The journey itself offered a chance to see a less-visited side of Sri Lanka, away from the more traditional tourist routes.
Experiencing the Unique Character of Jaffna
The final major destination of the tour was Jaffna, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka’s northern peninsula.
Jaffna offers visitors a distinctive cultural experience, with its own traditions, cuisine, architecture, temples and way of life.
For Anup and his family, visiting Jaffna was an opportunity to experience a part of Sri Lanka that many travellers do not get to explore.
The northern landscapes, local communities and rich Tamil heritage made this a particularly special conclusion to their journey.
A Journey Beyond the Usual Tourist Trail
The route taken by Anup and his family was different from a typical Sri Lankan holiday.
Pidurangala → Kaudulla → Polonnaruwa → Anuradhapura → Mannar → Jaffna
